Police have broken up a sophisticated and large scale food supply network, based in Lithuania but believed to also reach into Italy and Germany. The criminal gangs purchased date-expired, or near-expiry, food then used sophisticated equipment to remove the date codes and re-label with a new date before selling on. It appears to have been "best before" products rather than "use by", so primarily a risk to food quality rather than consumer safety. There are no reports of consumer illness
