Through my innovative skills, I have ensured compliance with all relevant food legislation, including the Food and Drugs Act and its Regulations. I have developed new techniques for implementing traceability systems that provide unique genetic fingerprints for various products, including food, wood, and insect pests. These techniques have enabled a deeper understanding of the dynamics of filamentous fungi producing mycotoxins and microbial populations in food during craft or industrial processes. Additionally, they have shed light on the movements of insect pests in agricultural systems. Despite widely used analytical methods, such as microsatellite markers and stable isotopes, they do not reliably determine the geographical origin of migrant insects. As a Coordinator, I was responsible for creating training manuals on animal handling and product traceability. This was part of the European Project EDES, which aimed to strengthen food safety systems through SPS measures. The European Union [G/SPS/GEN/1074] funded the project from 2010 to 2015.
